Narrative

The clip begins with a dull looking character sat at a seat working on work, the chair then swivels round and the character looks emotionless directly at the camera, the music them begins and smirk takes over the face of the character. After a bit of choreography taking place within that room he sets off outside the room and down the hallway, he dances all the way to the stairway then there is dancing taking place on the stairs, he briefly leaves the building in search of an audience but unfortunately for him there isn't one, he then runs back into the building and continues dancing, until the end of the clip when he has made it back to his chair with the same smirk as before then the music ends and he once again goes emotionless and the chair swivels back around and he goes on doing his work.

Characters

I chose myself as the main character simply because in doing so I don't have to rely on major roles not participating for whatever apparent reason. The main reason i chose myself though is because I done an array of different dancing as a child for many years and i still have quite a rudimentary grasp of choreographing.

There may be potential other characters but I will chose them wisely, not going with the stereotypical friends choice as I want it to be as professional as I possibly could have it, so chosing the right person for the right part is vital.

Locations

At first I had a few potential locations, however there were limitations on all, in my intial idea I wanted the video to be set outside in the open, for this I had two potential loactions.

The first being the main streets that lead around murton, however the potential problems were the constant stream of cars and people passing, so although it would bring sometimes added characters unintentionally, quite a number of times it wouldn't have the same final product as my idea.

The other location was a road that leads towards the woods, it's barely ever used by the public unfortunately this also had its problems, it has a lack of natural light available, it's quite dark at certain times of the day, so if i chose this location it would mean filming at certain times of the day, with a limited amount of time in which to do so.

These two locations both have plus sides however, the main one being the amount of space, it's pretty much  unlimited with both locations, even the road that leads into the woods goes on for about a mile.

I rethought my idea and decided to do it similar to that of "weapon of choice" where it happens inside, this was were the problem lay, finding a location. I had a brief chat with my lecturer and she told me to think about making it appear in a certain way without it being what it appears, so I pondered over that and decided that if I could disguise the college as another building, then this would work, it also has a potential of quite a lot of space as its sheer size. So, this is the reasoning for chosing is as my location.

Mood Board

just incase it's hard to read as my writing isn't the greatest...

MOOD BOARD
A MUSIC VIDEO
  • very minimalistic lip syncing perhaps even none focusing on a choreographed dance
  • My song choice: Curtis Mayfield - Move on up
  • Inspirations came from videos by Daft Punk and also videos like weapon of choice and praise you by Fatboy Slim
  • The main focus will be one or two dancers to lowe the risk of unreliability and also too many dancers can make the production farcical
  • The camera shots will typically be long shots, showing the full body and it's surroundings

Inspirational Texts

I want to create a music video that focuses around choreography rather than lip syncing, I gained my inspirations from videos by Daft Punk and Fatboy Slim. I'm focusing on Weapon Of Choice by Fatboy Slim and Around The World by Daft Punk as the two both are about dance however Fatboy slim Video features just Christopher Walken solely whereas Daft Punk has a whole crew of dancers.

Fatboy Slim - Weapon Of Choice
It's such a great video, I don't know anyone who doesn't like this video, Christopher Walken dancing is hilarious and completely unexpected, the choreography used is actually really good, similarly Praise You is another great video by Fatboy Slim which features Spike Jonze as the leader of a dance troup.

The Weapon Of Choice video begins with Christopher Walken sat on a chair, seemingly contemplating something, then he stands up and walks rather sheepishly and suddenly pauses and breaks into dance. The setting appears to be a hotel, I don't think it'd be possible for me to emulate this in mine as it costs funds which I don't have to close off and use such a large complex. More than likely when it comes to doing mine i'll have to use a public place if i want a large space, this may cause complications as there will be public around, so it may take a few attempts. The mise en scene is typical of what is to be expected of a hotel, objects like esculators, tables and chairs are used in the dance perhaps I could interpret this into my work, upon choosing my location I could try and scout out some potential objects to replicate what has been done in this video.

Daft Punk - Around The World
This video is more complex than it initially appears, although the choreography appears fairly simple there is so many different dancers involved, so everyone has to be in time and each individual group are actually representing the different instruments involved, to emulate this into my work would be too complex, so I think I'm going to have to have only one or two dancers. The setting of the video takes place in a studio, this may be easy to copy as I may be allowed use of a studio, so I should really take this into consideration, however I'd need my own mise en scene and props. The use of lighting is more prominent in this video, however it appears to be many strobe lights all in perfect time with the video and the dancers.

When it comes to creating my own i think i could emulate a lot from these videos but I'm also going to look to create something original.
